How to use and Manage Advanced DNS Zone Editor in cPanel

What is DNS Records

A DNS (Domain Name System) name server stores DNS records for a domain name. It’s a small set of instructions for resolving specified Internet domain names.

Common DNS Records

  • A records: An A record map a domain name to an actual IP (Ipv4) address.
  • CNAME records: CNAME (canonical name) records define aliases by associating one domain name with another.Its map a domain name to another domain name.
  • TXT records: TXT records can contain any arbitrary text data. They are often used to define SPF (Sender Policy Framework) or DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) settings.
  • SRV records: An SRV (Service) record points one domain to another domain name using a specific destination port. 
  • AAA records : An AAAA record points a domain to an IPv6 address.Its similar to the A record, but it allows you to point the domain to an Ipv6 address.

How to Create Record in Advanced Zone Editor using cPanel

To use the Advance DNS Zone Editor in cPanel :

  1. Login to cPanel Control Panel using your account.
  2. Locate Domains Tab in your cPanel dashboard and click Advance Zone Editor icon.
  3. In the Advance Zone Editor Add Record , fill the required field as following:
    1. Type:select the DNS record Type from the drop down list.
    2. Name:Type the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) for the record.
    3. TTL:type the time-to-live value in seconds,if you are not sure what to enter in TTL  just type 14400, which is four hours.
    4. Address:If the type is an A record type in the address an Ipv4 IP address.
    5. IPv6 Address: If the type is an AAA record type in the address an Ipv6 IP address.
    6. CNAME:If the type is an CNAME record type in the address the associated canonical name for the domain name that you specified before.
    7. TXT Data: If the type is an TXT record type the data for the TXT record.
    8. If the Type is SRV record : the following fields need to fill:
      1. Priority:Number to specify the order priority of the service.
      2. Weight:Relative weight for SRV records with the same priority.
      3. Port:TCP or UDP port on which the service can be found.
      4. Target:The canonical host-name of the server that provide the service.
  4. Click Add Record button.

How to Remove Record from Zone File Records in cPanel

  1. Login to your cPanel control panel.
  2. Locate Domains Tab in your cPanel dashboard and click Advance Zone Editor icon.
  3. Under Zone File Records Locate the DNS record you want to delete and under Actions click Delete link.
  4. Confirm the deletion operation buy click Delete.
